Zirconia has redefined what a dental crown can be. Where previous generations faced a trade-off between the natural translucency of feldspathic porcelain and the fracture resistance of metal-ceramic, modern monolithic and multilayer zirconia eliminates that compromise.
At z-aesthetic, all ceramic restorations are fabricated in our in-house master laboratory. Our ceramist and treating clinician collaborate at every stage—from shade selection under standardised lighting to final glaze—ensuring a result that integrates seamlessly with your natural dentition.
Clinical longevity of any crown depends on oral hygiene, bruxism, and occlusal load. No restoration lasts indefinitely; realistic expectations will be discussed at your consultation.
Clinical Advantages of Zirconia
Exceptional Fracture Resistance
Zirconia oxide ceramic exhibits flexural strength values of 900–1,200 MPa—significantly higher than feldspathic porcelain or lithium disilicate—making it the material of choice for posterior high-load zones.
Metal-Free & Biocompatible
Zirconia is completely metal-free, eliminating the dark metal margin often visible with older PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns and avoiding allergy risks associated with base metal alloys.
Natural Light Transmission
Modern multilayer translucent zirconia (e.g., Vita Suprinity, Kuraray Cerasmart) closely mimics the depth and gradation of natural enamel, enabling aesthetic results that are difficult to distinguish from natural teeth.
In-House Laboratory Precision
Our onsite lab eliminates external handoffs and courier delays. Clinician and ceramist communicate directly, and adjustments are made chair-side in real time rather than requiring a second courier cycle.
Treatment Sequence
Consultation & Treatment Planning
We evaluate the tooth, surrounding tissues, and occlusion. Digital photographs and shade analysis under standardised lighting are taken. Options (monolithic vs. layered, zirconia vs. e.max) are discussed.
Preparation & Provisional
Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. A same-session provisional crown protects the prepared tooth and allows you to assess aesthetics and function while the final restoration is fabricated.
Digital Impression
An intraoral scanner captures a high-resolution digital impression—eliminating the discomfort and distortion risk of traditional putty impressions. The digital file is transferred immediately to our in-house lab.
CAD/CAM Design & Milling
Our ceramist designs the restoration in 3D CAD software, selecting the optimal block grade and translucency level. The crown is milled from a pre-shaded zirconia blank and characterised by hand.
Try-In & Occlusal Adjustment
At the fit appointment, the crown is placed without adhesive for a trial seating. Contacts, occlusion, and shade are verified under multiple lighting conditions. Adjustments are made in the lab before final cementation.
Adhesive Cementation
The internal surface is tribochemically conditioned and the crown is permanently cemented with a dual-cure adhesive resin. Occlusion is rechecked and polished to a final finish.
Monolithic vs. Layered Zirconia
Monolithic High-Translucency Zirconia
Cut from a single block, monolithic crowns have no veneering porcelain to chip. Recommended for posterior teeth and bruxers. Modern 5th-generation translucent grades are aesthetically suitable even for premolars.
Layered (Cutback) Zirconia
A zirconia coping is overlaid with hand-applied feldspathic veneering ceramic for maximum aesthetic depth. Preferred for anterior teeth where mimic of incisal translucency and surface texture is paramount.
IPS e.max (Lithium Disilicate)
Although not zirconia, e.max is offered alongside it for single anterior crowns and veneers. Lower strength than zirconia but exceptional natural optical properties for the most demanding aesthetic cases.
Indicative Investment
Crown costs vary with the material grade selected, the degree of custom characterisation, and whether adjacent restorations are required. As a general orientation, a full-coverage zirconia crown at z-aesthetic is priced at approximately €900–1,400 per unit. Statutory health insurance provides a fixed subsidy (Festzuschuss) towards the cost; private dental plans typically cover a higher proportion. A precise itemised cost plan is provided before any treatment begins.
