Spectrophotometer shade matching

Discoloured teeth are one of the most common aesthetic concerns our patients present with—yet also one of the fastest to address. At z-aesthetic, we use clinically validated LED-activated power bleaching systems to lighten tooth shade by up to eight Vita units within a single appointment.

Unlike over-the-counter kits, our in-office protocol is supervised step by step by a dental specialist. Shade is measured before and after with a calibrated spectrophotometer, and all active ingredients are isolated from gingival tissue with a precision barrier gel.

Individual results depend on initial tooth colour, aetiology of staining, and enamel condition. Results shown are indicative; no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

Why In-Office Bleaching?

Clinically Controlled Concentration

Professional-grade hydrogen peroxide formulations are significantly more effective than consumer products. Concentration and exposure time are titrated to your individual enamel tolerance.

LED Photoactivation

Our Zoom/LED light system accelerates the oxidation reaction, reducing treatment time while maintaining a comfortable pulp temperature throughout.

Immediate, Measurable Result

Before and after shade is documented with a calibrated spectrophotometer. Most patients achieve four to eight Vita units of improvement in a single session.

Safe Gingival Protection

A light-cured barrier gel isolates soft tissue before any bleaching agent is applied, eliminating the most common source of sensitivity and irritation.

Treatment Sequence

01

Consultation & Shade Analysis

We review your dental and medical history, photograph your smile, and record your baseline Vita shade with a spectrophotometer. Contraindications are identified at this stage.

02

Prophylaxis (if required)

Surface deposits and pellicle are removed before bleaching begins. This ensures even penetration of the active gel and accurate colour comparison.

03

Gingival Protection

A precision resin barrier is applied and light-cured to protect the gingival margin and papillae throughout the procedure.

04

LED Power Bleaching

The hydrogen peroxide gel is applied in two to three cycles of 15 minutes each, activated by our LED lamp. Shade is checked between cycles.

05

Fluoride Remineralisation

A fluoride-rich remineralisation gel is applied post-bleaching to reduce transient sensitivity and restore surface mineral content.

06

Final Shade Documentation

Post-treatment shade is recorded and compared to baseline. We discuss maintenance recommendations, dietary advice, and whether a top-up home kit is appropriate.

Contraindications & Limitations

Existing Restorations

Bleaching whitens natural enamel but does not change the colour of composite fillings, crowns, or veneers. If restorations are visible, these may need to be replaced after whitening to match the new shade.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Professional bleaching is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We recommend postponing treatment until after this period.

Severe Enamel Erosion

Teeth with significant enamel loss or exposed dentine may experience pronounced sensitivity. An alternative approach such as ceramic veneers may be more appropriate.

Tetracycline Staining

Intrinsic tetracycline discolouration is notoriously resistant to peroxide bleaching. Multiple sessions or alternative restorative options should be discussed during consultation.

Indicative Investment

In-office power bleaching is priced individually depending on the extent of treatment and any preparatory prophylaxis required. As a general orientation, costs for a single LED bleaching session are approximately €400–800. A precise treatment plan and cost breakdown is provided at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transient sensitivity during and for 24–48 hours after treatment is common and usually resolves spontaneously. We apply a remineralisation gel post-treatment and can prescribe a desensitising toothpaste. Persistent sensitivity is rare and should be discussed with your dentist.

Results vary depending on dietary habits (coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco) and individual enamel characteristics. Most patients retain a noticeably lighter shade for 12–36 months. Periodic top-up treatments with a take-home kit can extend longevity.

Peroxide bleaching only acts on natural tooth enamel. Existing ceramic or composite restorations will not change colour. If restorations are in aesthetically prominent positions, we will discuss whether replacement after whitening makes sense for your situation.

We recommend waiting at least two weeks after bleaching before placing new composite fillings or ceramic restorations. This allows the shade to stabilise and ensures accurate colour matching for any subsequent work.
