Periodontal risk assessment
Consistent professional prophylaxis is the single most evidence-based intervention available in preventive dentistry. At z-aesthetic, our dental hygiene concept goes far beyond routine cleaning: we combine Airflow subgingival debridement, ultrasonic scaling, hand instrumentation, and fluoride remineralisation in a protocol calibrated to each patient's individual risk profile.
Regular PZR (Professionelle Zahnreinigung) appointments detect early-stage problems—initial caries, beginning periodontitis, erosion patterns—when they are still minimally invasive to treat. This keeps total treatment costs low and preserves natural tooth structure.
The frequency and scope of prophylaxis appointments should be determined individually with your dentist based on your personal periodontal risk profile.
Clinical Benefits of Professional Prophylaxis
Plaque & Calculus Removal
Supragingival and subgingival deposits that cannot be removed by home hygiene are thoroughly cleared, reducing the bacterial load responsible for caries and periodontitis.
Early Disease Detection
Each appointment includes a periodontal probing and visual inspection. Early gingivitis and initial caries are identified and addressed before they progress to costly restorative treatment.
Surface Polish & Stain Removal
High-grade polishing paste and an EMS Airflow device remove extrinsic staining from coffee, tea, and tobacco, restoring natural tooth brightness without any bleaching agents.
Fluoride Remineralisation
Professional fluoride varnish application strengthens enamel, closes micro-fissures, and reduces the risk of hypersensitivity—particularly important after scaling.
Our PZR Protocol
Periodontal Assessment
We measure and document pocket depths, bleeding on probing, and recession levels. This baseline guides the scope of the session and monitors changes over time.
Airflow Subgingival Debridement
The EMS Airflow system uses a fine powder-water-air jet to remove biofilm from supragingival surfaces and—with the PLUS handpiece—from subgingival pockets up to 4 mm.
Ultrasonic Scaling
Calculus deposits that cannot be dislodged by Airflow are removed with a piezo scaler. The tip vibrates at a frequency that fractures calculus while minimising enamel abrasion.
Hand Instrumentation
Residual subgingival calculus in deeper pockets is removed with curettes. This step requires tactile skill and is performed by our trained hygienist or specialist.
Polishing
A low-abrasion polishing paste and prophy cup are used to smooth enamel surfaces and remove residual staining, making it harder for new plaque to adhere.
Fluoride Varnish & Home-Care Coaching
We apply a fluoride varnish and provide individualised coaching on interdental hygiene technique. The appropriate maintenance interval is agreed with you based on your risk profile.
Children's Prophylaxis
We offer age-appropriate prophylaxis for children from the eruption of the first permanent molars. Fissure sealing, fluoride varnish, and early dietary counselling are integrated into each visit. Prevention started early has a lifelong impact on oral health.
Indicative Investment
The scope—and therefore the cost—of a prophylaxis session varies with the degree of calculus accumulation, pocket depths, and the time required for hand instrumentation. As a general orientation, a full PZR session at z-aesthetic ranges from approximately €100 to €250. Statutory health insurance (GKV) covers a basic annual hygiene appointment; more comprehensive services are typically self-pay. A detailed cost breakdown is provided at your appointment.
